Professional Review

Imagine your greatest nightmare - being trapped on a boat with no water and supplies surrounded by nothing but the vast ocean. This is what this game is all about! Now add to that man-eating sharks, and you get new cool survival game to play. You can download Raft for
Windows, Linux, and Mac OSX.

Graphics: 3

Rather average graphics but quick enough to don’t waste time on getting things from water and have them done. Everything looks soft enough but not realistic enough. The water doesn’t have any effects like waves, flows, splashes and looks artificial. When you swim in the water, you can see that objects don’t lay on it the right way. There’s no animation when you interact with the environment (catch, cook or build things) - they just appear from the air.

Gameplay: 3.5

This is an early access game, so basically, it’s not ready yet. All member of the appropriate STEAM community can participate in creating and perfecting this game. There’s no storyline so far - we don’t know how we ended up with the hook only on the raft in the middle of the ocean with a dangerous shark nearby. And you have to take it from there and try to survive.

You begin with grappling all planks, seaweed and fish you see near your raft. Better to use the hook for it because once you try to swim to your target, the shark will swim closer to you. Watch out for the barrels - they have most of the important stuff for you, but those don’t come often.

Then you have to build your life out of those supplies. You will make a bigger and better boat (even double decker if you want), boil and drink water, cook dinners and even plant the seeds. That’s right you can plant a palm tree here.

Always watch your health, hunger and hydration levels - they run out pretty fast, so you constantly have to think about that as well. Fishing and killing shark will help you with that. To kill the shark you have to choose the spear from your inventory and hit it 3 times. There always some amount of times you need to interact with things in order for them to do what you want them to do.

Controls: 3

You can walk, grab, repair, destroy, build, create, kill sharks and even fish in this game. For that, you need to use the menu which pops up if you hit appropriate button (different depending on what platform you play). The menu will be on the left, it has three main icons and more options to do will pop up once you press them. The inventory is always at the bottom center, your health, hunger and water level is on the right.

Replay Value: 2

This game isn’t realistic. If you really end up one day on the raft in the middle of an ocean, there won't be barrels with valuable items floating around so you’ll never be able to do even 10% of the stuff you can in this game. And also it’s impossible to desalinize water without special very difficult and expensive equipment. So this game is not easy at all, hence, not too many people would like it.

Conclusion

From this Raft review, you already know that this game is kind of stressful. Not only you have to survive with no food or water in the middle of nowhere but you also get the pressure but the shark which you always see near you. Maybe it would be better if it would pop up unexpectedly and only after some time when you swim. But if you like additional stress maybe you’ll like this game. very new and has fresh, interesting gameplay. Also, everything depends on luck with the materials flowing around - you can get good ones right or away or sometimes you have to wait for the ones you need for a long time.

Conclusion

Once Raft is downloaded you'll find yourself in the beautiful world made of the ocean only where you have to survive and thrive against deadly sea beasts.

Pros : Unusual gameplay;
Fast engine.

Cons : Too complicated.
