Paladins: Champions of the Realm is a free-to-play team-based hero shooter. Download Paladins for PS4 and join more than 10 million players all around the world in fierce 5x5 battles of mighty champions.
Hero shooters, like most of the shooters, rely on graphics heavily. If you’re going to be spending hundreds of hours in the game fighting on the same old maps over and over again, it’d better be really good maps. Paladins’ maps and graphics, in general, are good enough, and each champion has his or her own unique set of animations that reflect hero’s personality and greatly improve immersion.
Still, there are a few odd bugs you encounter from time to time like disappearing menu backgrounds or a HUD overlay that stays on screen a little longer than it should. But such problems are rare, and they do not directly affect the gameplay.
Aside from being a pretty balanced and overall satisfying hero shooter, Paladins can impress with its depth: it really does let you choose your own playstyle. Of course, there are 36 champions to choose from, but you can define your role for each particular game all thanks to this powerful customization system. Before every match, each player picks one out of four talents that can dramatically change the way that hero fights.
Beyond that, you get to pick five out of 16 cards to create preset loadouts that improve your champion’s stats and abilities. But even after the start of the match, you can continue to buy items that can slightly improve your performance. That degree of customization is the most important feature of Paladins – not to mention a couple of different modes with 16 tactically compatible maps.
Controls of the game are smooth and intuitive, and the whole customization system starts to feel natural very soon. You can assign cards and items with ease, and the controls stay responsive and comfortable even in the heat of the battle.
Replay Value: 5
High replay value is pretty much the main prerequisite for the success of any hero shooter, and Paladins sure does have it. Even without all the customization and loadout experiments, the game offers almost addictive but not very repetitive gameplay. There are so many heroes to unlock, so many card combinations to try and so much to experience in general that the game won’t bore you any time soon.
The Bottom Line
Paladins reviews seem to lack something the game has: the atmosphere. You can read about its cool gameplay features a hundred times, but it is easier to just give it a try. With the free-to-play model, you can quit any time you want – or that’s what you’ll be telling yourself for the next 250 hours.
It’s one of the best hero shooters, and it’s free-to-play. What else do you need? Download Paladins and prepare to spend months in this fantastic game.
